God of War 3 Remastered in Review |
Set in the realm of brutal Greek mythology, God of War III Remastered is the critically acclaimed single-player game that allows players to take on the fearless role of the ex-Spartan warrior, Kratos, as he rises from the darkest depths of Hades to scale the very heights of Mt Olympus and seek his bloody revenge on those who have betrayed him. Armed with double-chained blades and an array of new weapons and magic, Kratos must take on mythologys deadliest creatures while solving intricate puzzles throughout his merciless quest to destroy Olympus .
This remaster is a lot more than just the PS3 version at 1080p. Playing with it these last 2 days, its clear that texture resolution, shadows and lighting have been upgraded significantly. The geometry is the same, but this does not look like a PS3 game and is actually up there with some of the better looking titles on PS4.
The gameplay itself has aged well and its kind of refreshing to play because there hasnt been anything like it since the release of the new consoles. It still has the most epic boss fights Ive seen in a game, and I think picking God of War 3 for the remaster was the best choice (Its one of the best games in the franchise). The 60FPS frame rate makes more of a difference here than in most games; the game opens with you fighting on the shoulders and arms of a moving Titan, while a boss claws into it, twisting it this way and that. Between the moving ground, the scale of the boss, the special effects, and your character attacking it, there is a fluid visual display going on that at times is so impressive that its beyond anything shown on PS4 so far.
My only gripe is the cut scene movies, which look like they are ripped straight from the PS3 version at 720p, possibly upscale 1080p but not native (they are a little blurry and even have jaggies in them).

The switch from cut scene to gameplay is a bit jarring because the quality is vastly different, but the cut scenes are still decent and more than serviceable. Also, the title screen looks unchanged from PS3 and doesnt make a good first impression.
